First CHRONOS Education Workshop: Paleontological Research Institution, Ithaca NY, March 17-18, 2005

Purpose of the workshop

This goal of this workshop is to give the members of the CHRONOS Education and Outreach working group the opportunity to discuss existing E&O activities related to CHRONOS's goals, coordinate E&O efforts, and to identify how CHRONOS can contribute to national and international efforts to effectively communicate the concept of "deep time" in formal and informal education setting using hands-on and virtual activities.

Travel to Ithaca

Participants can reach Ithaca by plane (ITH). Invited participants should inquire with a travel agent or with online travel reservation engines (e.g., Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity etc.) to locate the lowest possible economy fare (for air). If you will attend the NE-GSA meeting in Saratoga Springs (3 hours drive to Ithaca), please let me know if you will be renting a car instead of flying using the registration form.

Travel to and from the hotel

Here you can find information on Ithaca. The airport is a short taxi ride from the hotel and the hotel has complimentary shuttle service to and from the hotel. We will have a van for transportation between the hotel and PRI so you won't need to rent a car.

Lodging

A block of rooms have been reserved at the Holiday Inn in downtown Ithaca ((607) 272-1000), at $99/day + taxes. Please contact the hotel directly to reserve a room before February 15 and mention "CHRONOS" to receive the special rate. CHRONOS will cover the room cost for up to three nights. You will be responsible for incidental expenses.

Workshop Location

The workshop will take place at the Paleontological Research Institution. Please download this pdf file of a map of Ithaca. The Museum of the Earth at PRI is in the upper left; the Cornell campus is on the right side of the darker green shaded area; and Ithaca Commons is at the center of commercial downtown. The map has no scale, but it's probably 6 or 8 km from the left to right side of the map.

Registering for the workshop

Please register on line to confirm your participation in the workshop. The registration deadline is February 15.

Workshop Schedule

The workshop will begin on March 17 in the morning and end the afternoon of the 18th. We are going to have an ice-breaker at PRI the evening of March 16 at 7 PM. An agenda will be available online shortly prior to the workshop.
